The Work of God's Children Illustrated Bible is a public domain Bible translation which is being developed through a wiki interface by The Work of God's Children, a nonprofit corporation with 501(c)3 tax-exempt status from the IRS.[1] Based on the Douay-Rheims Bible Challoner Revision, the translators apparently consider illustrations an integral part of the WGCIB and plan to integrate public domain images in the WGCIB's primary distribution, to the point where the project includes the term "illustrated" as part of the translation's official name.[2]
The WGCIB has not yet been submitted for ecclesiastical approval and hence has not obtained official recognition as a Catholic version of Sacred Scripture. Canon 825 of the Roman Catholic Code of Canon Law provides:
§1. Books of the sacred scriptures cannot be published unless the Apostolic See or the conference of bishops has approved them. For the publication of their translations into the vernacular, it is also required that they be approved by the same authority and provided with necessary and sufficient annotations.
The WGCIB's website says they plan to submit a finalized version in the future, but at this time is encouraging the clergy to utilize the project's Mediawiki setup and edit the WGCIB themselves.[2]
